Selling a Car on eBay: Gathering Vehicle Information

Selling a Car on eBay: Gathering Vehicle Information

If you want to sell your car on eBay, you may head right to eBay.com to create a listing. Before doing so, there are two things you want to do. They are take pictures of your vehicle and gather information on that vehicle. A well-written and detailed description is an important component of selling a car online. So, what type of information do you need?

The car's make, model, and year. If there is a sub-model, such as an LX, write this in too. This information should not only appear in your listing description, but the headline too. Luckily, you should already know this much about your car, so no digging is required. Also, state whether the vehicle is manual or automatic and how many cylinders the car has.

The car's VIN number. Unfortunately, it can be hard for some car owners to find their VIN number. This is a 17-didget number that appear on all newer model cars. The best place to look is your vehicle registration or vehicle title. If you cannot find these items right now, although you should have them before selling the car, look on the driver's side door or dashboard.

The car's mileage. This is very important, as it gives people an idea how much life a used car has left. If you are still driving the car, state that the mileage will change, but not by much. You don't want a buyer to pull out of the sale because the mileage was different than originally reported. If possible, do not drive the car long distances when it is listed on eBay.com.

The car's safety features. Safety features are important because many buyers look for them. Safety features can lower a buyer's insurance payments. If your car has safety features, be sure to highlight them. These features include daytime running lights, an anti-theft system, anti-lock brakes, and airbags.

The car's optional features. These features tend to fall into two categories. They are power options and optional add-ons. For power features, you may have air conditioning, power windows, cruise control, and power locks. These features make owning and driving the car easier. For optional add-ons, there may be a remote control starter, navigation system, sunroof, CD player, leather seats, and entertainment centers. These features make owning and driving the car fun.

The car's damage report. If you have owned the car for years, it is likely that you had a couple of mishaps. These may not be full-blown accidents, but backing into your garbage that resulted in a small scrape. Buyers want to know everything about cars. Don't hide anything. If your car has a small dent or scratch, know and list this information. Even damage that has been repaired should still be reported.

The car's maintenance history. Speaking of damage, highlight the car's maintenance history. Even if the car has never been in an accident, you have likely had it in the shop. State the work done. In fact, it may help to sell the car. Did you just replace the brakes two weeks ago? This is something a buyer would like to hear. Mention when the car was last serviced, when it got new tires, when the oil was changed, and so forth.

The car's warranty status. If you purchased the car new and it is only a couple of years old, it may still be under warranty. Before giving any information to interested buyers about the warranty, make sure it is transferable. You can check with the vehicle manufacturer or the dealership in which you bought the car from.

Finally, take pictures. Since you are outside gathering information about the vehicle, take a few pictures with a digital camera. When doing so, take pictures of the car interior. You want to photograph the dashboard, mileage, front seats, back seats, and trunk. For the exterior of the vehicle, take pictures of the front, back, right, and left sides. If the car has damage, take a close-up photograph of that damage.
